The rules

## Decimal hours, Dutch public holidays and the hours criterion.

### Rounding for a payslip or an invoice

A timesheet is written in hours and minutes (7:45). A payslip and an invoice use decimals (7.75), because hourly rate × hours does not add up otherwise. Round each line to two decimals and then add up; a quarter of an hour is 0.25, ten minutes 0.17. A day from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8:00, or 8.00 hours: at € 65.00 an hour that is € 520.00. Agree whether you round per day or per week, and stick to it.

### Public holidays in the Netherlands

King's Day is 27 April, or 26 April when the 27th is a Sunday. Good Friday and Liberation Day are official public holidays without a statutory day off; whether you are free is in your collective agreement (CAO) or contract. A public holiday at the weekend does not move. Easter follows the lunar calendar and also sets Ascension Day (39 days later) and Whitsun (49 days). In 2026 that gives 255 working days from Monday to Friday.

### Hours criterion 2026

At least 1,225 hours a calendar year on your business, and more time in your business than in employment unless you were not an entrepreneur in one of the five years before. If you start during the year, it is still 1,225 hours. Keep a record of your hours: the burden of proof is on you. What the criterion is worth to you is in the [ZZP tax calculator](/en/zzp-tax-calculator/).

Questions

## What people ask about the hours calculator.

How does this time calculator work out the hours between two times?

Both clock times are converted to minutes since midnight and subtracted. If the end time is before the start time, it is a night shift and the calculator adds 24 hours. The break is then taken off. From 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute break that is 8:00 minus 30 minutes: 7:30, or 7.50 as a decimal. The hours calculator above shows both.

How many working days are there in a year in the Netherlands?

In 2026 there are 261 weekdays from Monday to Friday. 6 official public holidays fall on a weekday, which leaves 255 working days. If Good Friday and Liberation Day are days off for you as well, it is 253. For any other year, use the working days calculator on this page.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. A quarter of an hour is 0.25, half an hour 0.50 and three quarters 0.75. So 7:45 is 7.75 hours and 7:20 becomes 7.33 hours, rounded to two decimals. The other way round, multiply the part after the decimal point by 60: 0.4 hours is 24 minutes. The hours worked calculator above shows the total in both notations.

What is the 1225 hours criterion (urencriterium)?

Anyone who spends at least 1,225 hours on their own business in 2026 meets the hours criterion (urencriterium) and is entitled to the self-employed deduction (zelfstandigenaftrek) of € 1,200, plus the starter's deduction where it applies. All hours count, including administration, quotes and travel time. If you start halfway through the year, the threshold stays 1,225 hours. At 24 hours a week for 46 weeks you reach 1,104 hours, 121 short; you would need 26.7 hours a week.

How do I count working days with public holidays?

First count all calendar days between the two dates, including the first and the last day. Take off the days that are not working days for you, usually Saturday and Sunday. Then take off the public holidays that fall on a remaining working day. A public holiday at the weekend costs no working day and does not move to the Monday in the Netherlands.

Which Dutch public holidays are there in 2026?

The official public holidays in 2026 are New Year's Day (Thursday 1 January 2026), Easter Sunday (Sunday 5 April 2026), Easter Monday (Monday 6 April 2026), King's Day (Monday 27 April 2026), Ascension Day (Thursday 14 May 2026), Whit Sunday (Sunday 24 May 2026), Whit Monday (Monday 25 May 2026), Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026) and Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December 2026). Good Friday and Liberation Day are official holidays too, but not statutory days off; whether you are free depends on your collective agreement (CAO) or contract. That is why they are separate tick boxes in the working days calculator.

Is Liberation Day a day off in the Netherlands?

Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag, 5 May) is an official public holiday but not a statutory day off. In many collective agreements it is a paid day off only once every five years, as in 2025 and 2030. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday, and most people work as usual. King's Day (Monday 27 April 2026) is a day off almost everywhere.
